Lower Eyelid Lift

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Englewood and Denver, CO

A lower eyelid lift, or lower blepharoplasty, rejuvenates the area beneath the eyes, addressing common concerns like eye bags, sagging skin, and wrinkles. (1)

The undereye region is often one of the first areas to start showing signs of aging. Sagging or fat descent in this area can make patients look tired and weary, even when they are well rested. The lower eyelid lift smooths this area out, giving patients a youthful, rested glow. (2)

Dr. Mario Imola, a double board-certified facial and reconstructive plastic surgeon, and Dr. David Kowalczyk, a double board-certified head, neck, and facial plastic and reconstructive surgeon, offer lower blepharoplasty at Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery. Their Englewood office is a supportive environment where patient safety and outstanding results are paramount.

About Lower Eyelid Lifts

During the lower eyelid lift, your surgeon may reposition or remove fat, tighten loose skin, or reinforce supportive eyelid structures. There are two different incisional techniques commonly used for the lower eyelid lift:

  • Internal Incision (Transconjunctival Approach): The internal incision is placed within the lower lid, making it so that no scarring will be visible from the outside. This approach is best when skin elasticity is good and fat pads are the main concern.
  • External Incision (Transcutaneous Approach): The external incision is often necessary if you have a lot of sagging skin that you would like to be removed. It is placed just below the lash line. (3)

Each patient’s operative technique will be determined by their surgeon to align with their needs and aesthetic goals.

Preparation

To help you prepare for your procedure, your surgeon will give you a list of guidelines—it is important that you follow these as closely as possible. This will likely include:

We want to make sure you feel supported and confident throughout your preparation period, so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to reach out!

Procedure

Anesthesia is administered to keep you comfortable during this treatment. Your surgeon will begin your procedure by marking the targeted areas for tissue removal and repositioning, then they will make the incisions. As mentioned earlier, this procedure can be done through a transconjunctival or transcutaneous approach. Using the chosen method, they will remove and adjust tissues and supportive structures. (4)

Recovery

After your lower eyelid lift, you will likely notice some immediate results, but it will take a bit more time before you see the ultimate outcome. It is standard to feel discomfort, swelling, and bruising, but many patients are pleasantly surprised by how easy recovery is.

You will need someone you trust to drive you home from the procedure, and some patients find it helpful to have some assistance around the home initially. You will begin to see improvements gradually as you heal and follow aftercare instructions. Your surgeon will provide you with helpful tips and ways to care for your incisions; these will include things like:

  • Keep your head elevated while you rest or sleep
  • Refrain from swimming or submerging your head underwater
  • Be mindful of your incisions and avoid high-impact activities
  • Keep the area clean and apply any topicals advised by your surgeon
  • Avoid makeup, harsh products, or abrasive skin treatments

Most patients return to work in about one to two weeks, but this depends on the physical demands of the job. Patients with more physically laborious jobs will need to take more time off to ensure their safety. Your surgeon will let you know when you can get back to exercise or more strenuous activities.

Throughout your recovery, you will attend follow-up appointments with your surgeon so that they can make sure everything is healing as planned. If you have any questions between these appointments, reach out to our office! We are here to help you every step of the way.

Results

A great lower eyelid lift will make a patient look at least 8–10 years younger. Not only will you look more refreshed and well-rested, but you will feel more confident, too! Our surgeons are so talented that your results will look completely natural and true to you. Their goal is always to bring out your inner beauty, not make you look completely different. Results of a lower blepharoplasty last for several years, with patients typically benefiting from the procedure for up to 10 years or longer. Thanks to our surgeons’ meticulous techniques, your results will age gracefully. We recommend making sure that you stay protected from the sun’s harmful UV rays by applying SPF daily and reapplying as needed, as well as following a skincare regimen that is tailored to your skin type and tone. Taking these precautions will ensure your results last as long as possible!

Corresponding Procedures

A lower eyelid lift can be paired with one or more procedures, depending on your aesthetic goals.

Upper Eyelid Lift

The upper eyelid lift targets the region above the eyes, opening them up by removing sagging. This procedure uses an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid and can improve peripheral vision if sagging tissue is causing an obstruction. When performed alongside a lower eyelid lift, the combined procedure is sometimes referred to as a quad blepharoplasty. Your surgeon can perform both of these procedures if you would like to address both areas in the same appointment.

Facial Fat Transfer

A facial fat transfer is commonly performed alongside a lower eyelid lift to improve facial volume and to help patients achieve a youthful plumpness. To perform this procedure, your surgeon will use liposuction to take fat from another area of your body and inject it into the targeted facial regions. Common areas for a facial fat transfer include the temples, undereyes, and cheeks. Because the fat comes from your own body, the treatment is completely biocompatible.

Midface Lift

For patients experiencing sagging in the midface, a midface lift can help restore definition and turn back the clock. Unlike a traditional facelift, which mainly treats the jaw, neck, and lower face, the midface lift focuses on the center region of the face, lifting the cheeks and redistributing volume for a more youthful appearance.

FAQ

How long do the results of a lower eyelid lift last?

Patients often benefit from their lower blepharoplasty for at least 5-10 years. Expert techniques will ensure your results age gracefully.

Will lower blepharoplasty leave visible scars?

This depends on the approach used during your procedure. If you want to address excess skin, your surgeon will likely need to make an external incision just below the lash line to remove tissue. If you have good skin laxity and want to primarily address fat pads, they may make an internal incision that will be completely hidden inside the eyelid. Does a lower eyelid lift help with dark circles? Yes, a lower eyelid lift can soften dark circles by smoothing the area and improving tissue distribution. Patients with undereye hollows may benefit from a combined approach with a fat transfer or dermal fillers.

How much time off from work will I need after a lower eyelid lift?

Patients typically take about two weeks off from work, although this depends on the physical demands of the job.
