Botox is an FDA-approved injectable treatment designed to reduce the appearance of dynamic facial wrinkles, creases, and fine lines. Botox is a neuromodulator, meaning it interacts with our neurotransmitters to inhibit the contraction of the targeted facial muscles. Neuromodulators, such as Botox and Dysport, have remained one of the most popular cosmetic treatments in the country for several years, with more than 9 million injections administered in 2024 alone. About Botox

Botox is a neuromodulator derived from the protein botulinum toxin type A that reduces the appearance of facial wrinkles and creases by relaxing the facial muscles. When administered, it inhibits the transmission of acetylcholine, suspending the facial muscles in a semi-relaxed state. (2) This reduces the muscle movements that wear on the skin, helping to enhance each patient’s overall appearance while preventing new signs of aging from developing.

Benefits of Botox

The benefits of Botox extend beyond just wrinkle reduction. Several of these benefits include:

  • Wrinkle Reduction: Botox effectively reduces the visibility of stubborn lines and creases on the face, restoring a smoother appearance to the skin.
  • Quick Treatment Time: Each treatment session lasts less than 15 minutes, making it easy to fit into a busier schedule.
  • No Downtime: Patients can return to their schedules after their treatment with minor restrictions. This allows patients to enhance their features without needing to schedule time away from work.
  • Lasting Results: The effects of Botox can last for months, providing continued relief from visual symptoms of aging.
  • Preventative Maintenance: Botox can be utilized as a preventive “pre-juvenation” measure against early wrinkles and creases.
  • Enhanced Confidence: Many patients experience an increase in self-esteem after seeing their rejuvenated, youthful-looking appearance.

Ideal Candidates

Candidates for Botox typically include anyone interested in reducing the appearance of wrinkles, fine lines, and creases around their face. Candidates should be in good overall health without any underlying medical conditions, allergies, or sensitivities to Botox or its ingredients. Realistic expectations must be held regarding what this procedure can accomplish. Botox is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding women, as well as patients with certain neuromuscular conditions. (3) One of our specialists will determine each patient’s candidacy for Botox during their consultation.

Personal Consultation

Before receiving their injections, each patient will need to attend a personal consultation. During this consultation, we will discuss the details of Botox in-depth and ask about your medical history, concerns, and ideal results. We will also evaluate your facial anatomy, muscle structure, and wrinkles.

This information is then used to develop a tailored treatment plan. Patients are encouraged to ask any questions they may have, as this consultation is time dedicated to them and their specific treatment.

Preparation

To prepare for Botox, patients will need to discontinue using medications and supplements with blood-thinning properties. You may be asked to modify your skincare routine to avoid acidic, abrasive, or harsh skincare products, such as exfoliants, retinoids, or chemical peels. Sun exposure should be limited, and proper protection should be worn, as any damage to the skin may result in the procedure being rescheduled. More detailed information will be provided during your consultation.

Procedure

On the day of your procedure, you should arrive with a clean face that is free from any makeup residue or skincare products. Each Botox injection session is very quick, typically taking just five to ten minutes to complete.

One of our injection specialists will lead you to a private area where your skin will be cleansed. A topical anesthetic may be applied; however, this is not always necessary. We will inject the Botox into specific areas of the face, targeting the underlying muscles responsible for the repetitive movements that lead to the development of wrinkles and creases. Some patients may receive several injections to address different areas of their face. Common treatment areas include the glabellar lines, or the ‘11’ lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet, and glabellar lines.

Recovery

After receiving their injections, patients are welcome to return to their normal routines. While there are light restrictions, there is no recovery time associated with Botox. It is normal to experience mild swelling or localized bruising at the injection sites, and some patients may have a mild headache. These effects are temporary and will fade within a few hours. Further recovery instructions will be provided during each patient’s consultation and before you leave your appointment.

Results

Patients will be able to start seeing the initial effects of Botox after approximately three to seven days, with the full effects becoming more apparent after ten to fourteen days. Each individual can enjoy a more youthful look as their facial muscles relax and their skin smooths itself, reducing the appearance of creases and wrinkles. The results of Botox can last three to four months before patients are recommended for retreatment. (3)
