About Forehead Lifts

A forehead lift is a procedure designed to raise and reposition the forehead tissue and eyebrows to restore a more youthful-looking appearance in the upper face. At Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery, Dr. Kowalczyk and Dr. Imola can perform either the direct forehead lift, mid forehead lift, trichophytic forehead lift, or endoscopic-assisted forehead lift to help each patient achieve their ideal facial aesthetic.

Suitable Candidates

Suitable candidates for a forehead lift include those experiencing significant signs of aging in the upper face, including sagging or drooping eyebrows, as well as heavy forehead wrinkles or creases. Patients with a tired or angry resting face, as well as those with brow asymmetry, may also find our procedure beneficial.

All candidates interested in our forehead lift should be in good overall health, free from any underlying medical conditions that may impair healing. Realistic expectations should also be held regarding what this procedure can accomplish. Patients should also be nonsmokers or willing to quit smoking until they are fully healed. Our surgeons will determine each person’s candidacy during their personal consultation.

Personal Consultation

At Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery, we ask that each patient interested in a brow lift attend a personal consultation before undergoing their procedure. This consultation is not only a chance for Dr. Imola or Dr. Kowalczyk to meet each patient, but also to find the best way to help them achieve their goals.

During the consultation, the surgeon will first converse with the patient about their medical history, concerns, and ideal aesthetic. From there, the surgeon will examine the condition of the patient’s facial skin before crafting a treatment plan. Personalized pre- and post-operative instructions will be provided for each patient, as well as an all-inclusive quote and time to discuss financing if needed. Each patient is encouraged to prepare and ask questions, as we want to ensure each individual feels informed and empowered before their forehead lifts.

Preparation

Each patient will receive a set of pre-operative instructions during their personal consultation to help them prepare for the brow lift. Patients may be asked to avoid the use of medications or supplements with blood-thinning properties, and should cease the consumption of nicotine products until healed. Logistically, patients will need to schedule time away from work or other social commitments to focus on healing. Transportation home after the procedure should also be pre-arranged.

Procedure

On the day of each patient’s procedure, they should arrive at our clinic with a clean face, free of any skincare products or makeup. Whether the open, endoscopic, or endoscopic-assisted forehead lift is being performed, patients can expect their procedure to begin with the cleansing of their skin. Each patient will also receive either general anesthesia or intravenous sedation to ensure their comfort and relaxation throughout the procedure. While the duration of each forehead lift may vary, individuals can expect an approximate treatment time of 1-2 hours.

Open Forehead Lift

The open forehead lift, also known as trichophytic brow lift, is a technique used to help elevate the position of the eyebrows. (2) Dr. Imola or Dr. Kowalczyk will discreetly place an incision that follows the hairline. It can be placed either at the level of the hairline (pretrichial) or 1 to 2 inches behind the hairline (trichophytic). They will then remove excess tissue while lifting and tightening the skin to create a more youthful appearance. Once the adjustments are made, the skin will be redraped and sutured, and the incisions will be closed.

Endoscopic-Assisted Forehead Lift

An endoscopic-assisted forehead lift is a type of “hybrid” forehead lift that combines the techniques of both the coronal and endoscopic lifts and is performed when more visibility and more extensive corrections are needed than the previous variations may provide. It uses the benefits of the endoscope to shorten the length of the incisions needed to perform the surgery through a traditional open approach. The incision typically runs along the hairline just above the brow and then cuts into the scalp hair over the temple region. This technique combines the precision and durability of the open approach with the shortened scars possible with the endoscopic approach. It is currently our most common type of forehead lift.

Recovery

Forehead lifts are typically performed as an outpatient procedure, meaning each patient will be able to go home on the same day as their appointment to start their recovery. It is important to take time away from work to prioritize resting for several days.

After the procedure, it is normal to experience bruising and mild swelling near the treated area. These effects will subside on their own, but patients may mitigate any discomfort by using a cold compress and recommended pain relief. Patients should avoid washing their hair for at least 48 hours, or however long their surgeon recommends. With the approval of our surgeons, most patients can return to work after 7-10 days, but should continue avoiding physical activities or strenuous tasks for several more weeks. Further instructions will be provided during the personal consultation.

Results

After a brow lift, patients will be able to enjoy a more youthful-looking appearance and a smoother forehead. The eyebrows will be in a more aesthetically pleasing position, and the skin above the eyes will be lifted as well. Individuals may also notice a reduction in wrinkles, creases, and other deep lines. The results of a brow lift are long-lasting, with many patients enjoying the effects of their procedure for years. (2) To preserve results, we recommend that patients maintain a healthy lifestyle and apply sunscreen when leaving the house; this helps to prevent accelerated aging.

Corresponding Procedures

Many procedures may be performed in conjunction with a brow lift for a more dramatic transformation, one of the most popular being our blepharoplasty procedure. Also known as eyelid surgery, this procedure is designed to help reduce excess skin around the upper and/or lower eyelids for a more revitalized, refreshed look. While the brow lift does provide a subtle, indirect lift around the upper eye area, a blepharoplasty often provides more impactful rejuvenation for this specific region. This procedure can be performed on both eyelids simultaneously or exclusively on either the upper or lower eyelids to address specific concerns.
