What is a Facial Fat Transfer?

Facial fat transfer is a procedure which moves fat in a purified form to the face. The areas for obtaining fat are usually the abdomen, inner thighs, or flanks. Similar to a filler, once harvested, the fat is added to areas of the face to improve contours and volume.

Who can benefit from a Facial Fat Transfer?

Any patient looking for improvement in facial symmetry and volume can benefit from facial fat transfer. Also, patients not interested in the maintenance needed with fillers make good candidates.

How is a Facial Fat Transfer performed?

The procedure can be performed under local anesthesia in the office. The areas of the face where augmentation is needed are identified. Fat is harvested from the abdomen or inner thighs. The amount needed can vary based on patient desires and body habitus. It is then processed into macro (large), micro (small), and nano (very small) fat using filters. The fat is then transferred to the face using cannulas. The face is intentionally over-inflated by 30-50% because not all fat will survive on transfer. Small, dissolvable stitches are placed, but no scars are made.

FAQ

What can I expect after a facial fat transfer?

Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery will provide post-operative instructions following facial fat transfer surgery. This important information will include how to care for the treatment area and when you can return to work or other activities. Patients should follow these guidelines closely to ensure proper healing. Swelling and bruising are normal after surgery and can take time to improve. Avoiding ice on the face is necessary in order to preserve the fat from temperature extremes. Final results are seen over 1-3 months. Many patients will take a few days off of work but then return quickly to light activity. We suggest avoiding strenuous activity and attending follow-up appointments to ensure proper healing.

Can fillers achieve similar results?
A dermal filler (for example, Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®) may improve symmetry and facial volume. While dermal fillers can create beautiful results, a facial fat transfer often lasts longer and looks more natural.

How long does a facial fat transfer take?
The length of time needed for your fat transfer will vary based on the number of areas injected. Typically, the procedure takes 2-3 hours.

Which areas of the face can be improved with a fat transfer?
Fat transfer can be used in many areas of the face. Popular sites are the cheeks, nasolabial folds, marionette lines, lips, under eyes, and temples.

How much does a facial fat transfer cost?

The cost of facial fat transfer varies based on the complexity of the procedure. The surgeon’s fees range from $2,500-5,000 not including anesthesia fees, facility costs, and supplies.
