A common request we get at Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery from our patients in Englewood, CO is to discuss some of the ways to improve the appearance of a tired look around the eyes. The eyes and upper third of the face convey a tremendous amount of expression. It’s important to discuss how the eyes fit in harmony with the brows and forehead.
Let’s talk about some of the least invasive to most invasive procedure options for rejuvenation.

What can BOTOX® do for my appearance?
BOTOX is a neuromodulator that is used to decrease muscle activity within the face. When injected around the sides of the eyes into the orbicularis oculi muscle, the Crow’s feet can be reduced, and there is usually a slight elevation of the brows in the 1 – 2 mm range. Some of the “hooding” seen from the upper eyelids may appear softened as well. BOTOX treatments take about 5 – 10 minutes to complete, and many of our patients see the optimal results 5 – 7 days after the injection. The effect of the BOTOX injections lasts roughly three months, so this treatment needs to be repeated throughout the year to maintain the results.
What is a blepharoplasty?
If there is excess upper eyelid skin, blepharoplasty may be a great option to remove sagging and drooping skin, improve vision by expanding the line of sight, and achieve a more youthful appearance. This involves a procedure – often performed using oral sedation in the office – where the skin is removed after careful measurement. You should expect bruising and swelling for several weeks afterward, but over time, the incisions become relatively unnoticeable.
When is a brow lift necessary?
Finally, there’s the brow lift. People don’t often realize the contribution the eyebrows and forehead play in the appearance of the eyes. Over time, gravity pulls the brow position lower. In women, this can make them appear tired, masculine, or even angry.
Sometimes, a brow lift can be performed in isolation, but it is often combined with an upper blepharoplasty to maximize the opening of the eyes. The procedure is done in an outpatient surgery setting using general anesthesia, where incisions are made near the frontal hairline of the scalp. The skin and brow can be elevated more than 5 – 10 mm and secured into a new, higher position. Tightness and numbness are expected for a few months, but the results of this procedure can be quite profound.
