Blepharoplasty Englewood, CO

The eyes are a key focal point on the face and one of the first areas in which patients begin to show their age. Excess skin around the eyes can not only impact a person’s vision; it can make a person look tired and older. Blepharoplasty (also known as eyelid surgery) is a plastic surgery procedure to minimize puffy eyelids and lift the lower or upper eyelid, creating a look that appears softer and rejuvenated.

Before and After Photos

Benefits

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, provides a number of great aesthetic and functional benefits, including:

  • Eliminating sagging, drooping skin
  • Improving vision by expanding line of sight
  • Achieving a more youthful, rejuvenated appearance
  • Producing a more alert, awake look
  • Minimizing “puffy” eyelids
  • Removing under-eye bags and circles
  • Enhancing comfort by reducing skin rubbing and irritation
  • Improving overall aesthetics of the eyes

Ideal Candidate

Eyelid surgery is a cosmetic surgery that is sought out by both women and men. During the initial consult, treatment alternatives will be explained by Dr. Imola based on your symptoms that need to be corrected. In most cases, ideal candidates wish to correct excess, drooping skin and folds that exist on the top eyelid, or puffy skin just under the bottom eyelid. These conditions can cause functional problems that can hinder of daily life. For a rejuvenated look, eyelid surgery may be the appropriate surgery for you. If you have hanging skin that folds over on the upper eyelid, or bulges and puffiness under the eyes, blepharoplasty can fix this to give you a more youthful appearance.

Procedure

Blepharoplasty (an eyelid lift) may be ideal for those who wish to improve the appearance of drooping skin and folds above their eyes or puffy skin just under the bottom eyelid.

  • Upper blepharoplasty assists in reducing the hanging skin that can impair vision to create a more flattering, lifted look. The incision point is often placed along the lid crease to trim away excess skin and tissue.
  • Lower blepharoplasty is performed to improve puffy skin under the lower lid or under-eye bags. In most cases, an incision is made along the lash line to allow access for fat removal, and the skin is subtly lifted to create a smoother look.

The results from eyelid lift surgery are generally visible after 4 – 6 weeks and can provide lasting facial enhancement for Denver area patients.

Expectations

Upper and lower eyelid surgery are outpatient procedures often performed under local anesthesia, general anesthesia, or IV sedation and may take around two hours to complete. At Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery, eyelid surgery may be done on the upper eyelid, lower eyelid, or both. Most patients are able to resume normal activities within 7 – 10 days after their blepharoplasty. About two weeks after eyelid surgery, any associated bruising or swelling usually resolves.

FAQ

Are you awake during eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty)?

At Colorado Facial Plastic Surgery, we use three types of anesthesia for our outpatient procedures: local anesthesia, IV sedation, and general anesthesia. With local anesthesia, the treatment area is numbed with a shot to keep you from feeling any pain or discomfort. IV sedation gives you a deep level of relaxation where you experience a minimal awareness of your surroundings with very little to no memory of the surgery. General anesthesia puts you in a medically induced coma, meaning you are fully asleep for the entire procedure.

How long does eyelid surgery take?

Most eyelid surgeries take about 1 – 2 hours if you are having both upper and lower lids done.

How long does it take to recover from eyelid surgery?

Most people will have some bruising and swelling for about 1 – 3 weeks after the surgery, but many people feel ready to get out and about after two weeks (even though your eyes will still be puffy and bruised looking). The overall look of your eyelids will continue to improve over the next 2 – 3 months.

Does eyelid surgery hurt?

Even just using local anesthesia, many patients feel little to no pain or discomfort. IV sedation gives you an even deeper level of relaxation and pain management, and with general anesthesia, of course, you will be asleep.

Is eyelid surgery covered by insurance?

Most insurers will cover eyelid surgery if medically necessary, meaning the eyelids are interfering with your vision. If the eyelid surgery is for aesthetic purposes, it may not be covered as it will be considered elective surgery. You should always check with your insurance provider before scheduling any procedure.
